The Hospites Nostri

The Hospites Nostri

"Our Guests."

Humanity is not alone.

For more than two centuries, four cloaked observation stations have quietly orbited near Earth's moon, serving as research outposts for a coalition of interstellar civilizations known collectively as the Hospites Nostri. What began as a scientific expedition has slowly evolved into one of the galaxy's longest—and strangest—anthropological studies.

To them, Earth is fascinating.

Not because it's advanced.

Because it's unpredictable.

The Liaison System

Rather than imposing their own culture, the Hospites Nostri adapt themselves to the civilizations they visit through a process known as Liaisoning—forming familiar points of connection before meaningful communication begins.

Earth has proven unusually difficult.

With no single mythology, philosophy, or cultural identity shared across humanity, the Hospites Nostri rely on four forms of Liaisoning:

  • Cultural — Adopting familiar archetypes and symbols.

  • Physical — Mimicking local biology.

  • Mental — Seeking compatible forms of intelligence.

  • Emotional — Building relationships through shared feeling.

For now, emotional liaisoning remains humanity's greatest strength.

Why They're Here

The Hospites Nostri originally arrived to study two mysteries unlike anything found elsewhere in the galaxy:

Earth's water, whose unusual chemistry produces intoxicating effects in many alien species.

Humanity itself, whose emotional complexity, contradictory belief systems, and relentless unpredictability continue to puzzle even the oldest civilizations.

Over time, curiosity became caution. As Earth's orbit filled with debris and its societies grew increasingly fragmented, the mission shifted from observation to long-term surveillance.

Earth remains under watch—not as a threat, but as an unanswered question.

The Four Orbs

"The galaxy's quietest neighbors."

Suspended in permanent formation beyond the Moon, the Four Orbs serve as the Hospites Nostri's mobile observation centers. Hidden behind an aging cloaking system, they continuously monitor Earth's biological, technological, environmental, and metaphysical activity.

Occasionally the cloak fails for only a fraction of a second, producing the phenomenon Mythheads call The Flash—a brief metallic glimmer near the Moon that has fueled decades of speculation.

To humanity it's a mystery.

To the Hospites Nostri...

it's a maintenance issue.

The Hospites Nostri do not fear humanity because it is powerful. They study humanity because no one—not even humanity—can reliably predict what it will do next.

Failed Contact

The Great Silence

Upon arriving in Earth's system, the Hospites Nostri attempted formal diplomatic contact with the planet's highest spiritual authorities.

No response was received.

Not from Heaven.

Not from Hell.

Not from anyone.

To this day, the silence remains one of the galaxy's most enduring mysteries.

The Water Problem

Earth's oceans contain naturally occurring compounds unlike those found anywhere else in known space.

To many Hospites Nostri species, terrestrial water acts as a powerful intoxicant, producing everything from mild euphoria to philosophical rambling depending on the individual.

What humans consider ordinary hydration...

the galaxy considers recreational.
