The Resonance Gig

No one applies. Yet somehow, the work always finds the right people.

Becoming a Dread-Bearer isn't a promotion, a calling, or a reward. It's a responsibility borne by a handful of individuals whose Resonance aligns with the universe's emotional infrastructure.

From the first Convergence to the final mission, every Dread-Bearer follows the same broad journey—learning to navigate Higher Life, solve conceptual riddles, protect reality, and, eventually, pass the torch to those who come after.

It's not an easy career.

It's simply a necessary one.

Behind everyday life exists a hidden system that quietly maintains the balance between the mortal world and the Afterlife. Dread-Bearers, Trip-Sitters, Mythheads, celestial administrators, and countless unseen forces all play a role in keeping reality stable while ensuring most of humanity never realizes anything unusual is happening.

This is the unseen machinery that keeps the Dakaverse running.

The Convergence

"There comes a day when every Dread-Bearer realizes they are no longer alone."

No one volunteers.

No one signs up.

No one receives a welcome packet.

Somewhere in the world, another person begins asking the same impossible questions.

Another sees what shouldn't be seen.

Another survives what should have killed them.

Eventually...their paths cross.

That meeting is known as the Convergence.

For a few, it's the beginning of a career.

For most...it's the beginning of the end.

Trip-Sitters

"Someone has to keep the body alive."

When a Dread-Bearer's Higher Self departs on supernatural missions, their mortal body—known as the Lower Life—remains behind. Impulsive, nearly indestructible, and operating almost entirely on instinct, Lower Life requires constant supervision.

Trip-Sitters are specially assigned caretakers responsible for protecting both the Bearer and everyone unfortunate enough to be nearby.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Lower Life

  • Prevent collateral damage

  • Manage emotional instability

  • Keep Bearers alive until they return

  • Keep Bearers alive until they return

Clocking In

"Higher Life begins."

Every mission starts the same way.

The Bearer's Higher Self separates from the physical body and enters the S. Ego Grounds, where emotional physics replace ordinary rules. This is where missions are received, riddles appear, and Resonance becomes tangible.

The body remains behind.

The work begins.

Higher Self and Lower Life

"One soul. Two impossible jobs."

Every Dread-Bearer exists in two simultaneous states.

Their Higher Self performs supernatural missions and tasks across the S. Ego Grounds, solving cosmic problems and maintaining emotional reality.

Meanwhile, their Lower Life continues living in the mortal world—guided by instinct rather than judgment and requiring careful supervision until the two halves reunite.

Together, they allow one person to exist in two worlds at once.

Riddles

"Reality asks questions. Dread-Bearers answer."

At the heart of every mission lies a conceptual riddle—not a puzzle of words, but one of emotional truth, paradox, and consequence. Solving a riddle doesn't simply reveal an answer; it helps determine how reality itself resolves.

Every solution leaves an imprint on the universe.

Mission Assignments

"Somebody has to answer the call."

Assignments originate through the Golden List after SRC verifies a disturbance and SAD authorizes a response. Missions range from investigating Resonance anomalies and stabilizing Bad Valves to assisting spirits, containing Mesmermania events, or preventing conceptual disasters before they reach the physical world.

No two missions are ever quite alike.

Golden Book and Golden List

"Who can help—and what needs fixing."

Two ancient artifacts quietly coordinate the work of the Resonance Civil Service.

The Golden Book identifies ordinary people capable of assisting the supernatural world.

The Golden List assigns the daily missions necessary to maintain emotional reality.

One tracks allies. One tracks problems.

They are the Dread-Bearers' greatest tool.

Promotions

"Experience earns responsibility."

As Dread-Bearers grow, so do the expectations placed upon them. Veteran Bearers mentor newcomers, tackle increasingly complex anomalies, oversee specialized operations, and may eventually become Generational Leaders entrusted with rare responsibilities.

Promotion brings greater authority...

...and greater paperwork.

Possession

When More Than One Soul Shares the Wheel

Possession is one of the rarest—and most misunderstood—phenomena in the Dakaverse.

Contrary to popular belief, possession is not limited to demons or ghosts. It is any event in which two consciousnesses occupy the same body, temporarily or permanently. Some are violent. Some are voluntary. Some are accidents of Resonance. Others are quietly sanctioned by the Ancient Pillar system itself.

Every form of possession shares three traits:

  • Multiple consciousnesses

  • Emotional vulnerability

  • A struggle over control

The question is never if another presence exists.

The question is who's driving.

Infernal Possession

Shared by force.

The classic demonic possession. An Infernal entity overrides a mortal host through emotional weakness, trauma, obsession, or temptation. The host remains fully conscious, watching events unfold without control while trapped within the invading entity's influence.

Illegal, dangerous, and emotionally devastating, Infernal possession is among the most heavily investigated offenses in the Dakaverse.

Celestial Possession

Shared by purpose.

Rather than domination, Celestial possession joins a higher soul with a mortal whose life has become part of a greater cosmic design. The two minds share memories, purpose, and emotional resonance, though the Celestial presence quietly guides the partnership.

To many cultures, this is remembered simply as divine inspiration.

Resonance Possession

Shared by accident.

The most common form of possession occurs when damaged Resonance, emotional echoes, spirits, or fragmented consciousnesses temporarily overwhelm a person's own emotional field.

These incidents often accompany trauma, Convergence events, Resonance Collapse, or severe emotional instability.

Most exorcisms, Resonance treatments, and Dread-Bearer interventions deal with this category.

Governing Soul Possession

Shared by responsibility.

The rarest and least discussed form of possession.

Every Original Dread-Bearer—and members of the Sun Triumvirate—continue to exist as quiet Governing Souls within their modern successors. They rarely interfere, serving instead as observers, guardians, and living records of the responsibilities entrusted to them.

They do not control.

They do not command.

They simply remain...

ready, should the universe ever require them.

Living With Two Minds

Not every possession is hostile.

Some become partnerships.

Some become burdens.

Some become legends.

Whether viewed as a curse, a calling, or a cosmic administrative oversight, possession remains one of the most profound intersections between emotion, identity, and Resonance in the Dakaverse.

Possession is less about losing yourself... and more about discovering who else was waiting inside.

Retirement

"Even legends eventually clock out."

Very few Dread-Bearers remain active for decades.

Some retire after years of service, becoming advisors, instructors, or quiet observers.

Others step away simply because they've carried enough of the universe's emotional weight.

Retirement is rare and respected.

Though SRC has been known to "ask nicely" for one last mission.

Former A / Former D

"Service doesn't always end the same way."

When a Dread-Bearer dies, their journey continues along two extraordinary paths.

Former A are honored members of A-Squad who retain echoes of their former service within Heaven's quiet order.

Former D become rare Infernal citizens whose experiences continue to shape Hell's strange society.

Neither group truly returns to ordinary existence.

Both remain living chapters in the history of the Ancient Pillars.
